Fedora 13 install from usb

Yesterday, I did a fresh install of Fedora 13 to new PC. With a Fedora 13 DVD ISO, 8GB USB flash disk, and Fedora 12 system in another PC, here the complete step to prepare the installation that I want to share to.

Please note:

  • I assume you have download the 64 bit version of Fedora 13 DVD ISO, and you saved the ISO file as /data/Fedora-13-x86_64-DVD.iso. Hey, I think it is also work with another x86_64 ISO, such as Fedora 13 Gnome, Fedora 13 KDE Spin, and many more!.

  • I assume your USB Flash disk device is /dev/sdb. Mine was /dev/sdd, as I have some HDD in existing system.

  • Every single step below must be done in root environtment. So you could use either su - or sudo [command].

Preparation steps:

  • Install LiveCD Tools and syslinux. Mine was livecd-tools-031-1 and syslinux-3.75-4, higher version should be better:
    yum install livecd-tools syslinux

  • Create usb flash install media, it takes some times to finish, so please be patient:
    livecd-iso-to-disk --reset-mbr /data/Fedora-13-x86_64-DVD.iso /dev/sdb1

  • That's it. You're done. Now you can safely remove your USB flash disk and following the short Quick Start Installation Guide or the complete Goddard Installation Guide. Go, Rock it!.
